Project Comment'The F9:10 population of 146 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) was developed from a cross of ''TG 26'' with ''GPBD 4'' made at the University of Agricultural Sciences in Dharwad, Karnataka, India. The F2 generation was progressed to the F9:10 by single seed descent, and 10 seeds of each RIL were planted for each of the two experimental replicates. Experimental plantings and phenotyping were carried out at the University of Agricultural Sciences at Dharwad in two distinct seasonal environments; the EI (Kharif 2007) and the EII (summer 2007). The Kharif season in Karnataka refers to the rainy monsoon period that occurs roughly between June and September, whereas the summer season in this Indian state describes the drier period roughly between March and May. Measurements from the two environment-specific experiments were pooled for the purpose of cross-environmental analysis. The seed content measurements of protein, oil, oleic acid, and linoleic acid were produced using Near Infrared spectroscopy (Spectrometer model 6500, Foss NIR systems, France). The spectroscopy analyses were performed on 15-20 g samples of seeds from each replicate of a parent or RIL. The DNA for genotyping of the F9:10 RILs and parents was extracted from young leaves of 2-week old plants. The seed protein and seed oil contents in parental genotypes and RILs were higher in the EI (Kharif 2007) season than in the EII (summer 2007). The range of seed protein contents observed was greater in the EII (summer 2007) season than in the EI (Kharif 2007), whereas the range of seed oil contents observed was greater in the EI (Kharif 2007) than in the EII (summer 2007). A broader range of values was measured in the EII (summer 2007) for the traits oleic acid, linoleic acid, and O/L ratio than in the EI (Kharif 2007) environment.'
